While preparing to launch The Greenrail Project, we have also been visiting places that could benefit from our initiatives.
Today’s spotlight is on Uji, Japan. Allow us to take you on a virtual journey through this captivating destination, renowned for its cultural heritage, natural beauty, and exquisite Matcha and Sencha (green) tea.
Nestled in the southern outskirts of Kyoto, Uji is a place where time seems to stand still, immersing visitors in a bygone era of elegance and tranquility. As you stroll through its ancient streets, lined with traditional wooden machiya houses and charming tea shops, one cannot help but be captivated by the rich tapestry of history that permeates every corner.
Uji is renowned for its exceptional tea production, particularly matcha, the powdered green tea that has become synonymous with Japanese tea ceremonies. The region’s fertile soil, pristine water sources, and ideal climate create the perfect conditions for cultivating the finest tea leaves. The delicate flavors and vibrant green hue are sure to leave a lasting impression on your senses. Many of the farmers in Uji are, however, retiring, or nearing retirement – maintaining the culture, skills and techniques of tea production are high on their priority.
Tea production in Uji requires significant care, skills and attention. To prevent excessive oxidation of the tea leaves that will cause it to be astringent (bitter taste), farmers have to implement preventive measures, including layering shade over the tea trees, and shortening the time between harvesting and processing of the tea leaves.
One of Uji’s most iconic treasures is the magnificent Byodoin Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its graceful Phoenix Hall, reflected in the tranquil waters of the surrounding pond, is an architectural masterpiece that has inspired countless artists throughout the centuries. Standing in front of this splendid structure, one can’t help but feel a deep sense of reverence and awe.
For nature enthusiasts, Uji offers a serene escape from the bustling city life. The Uji River, meandering through the city, is a picturesque spot for a leisurely boat ride or a peaceful stroll along its banks. During the cherry blossom season, the riverbanks are adorned with a breathtaking canopy of delicate pink petals, creating a scene straight out of a fairytale.
